Professor Brett Walker of Montana State University is one of a few people in the world that can read ancient Japanese writing. In the course of his research, he discovered a reference to Japanese wolves. These wolves became extinct only one hundred years ago, and no one was sure why. Professor Walker discusses not only the ecological changes that occurred which caused the extinction, but the religious and cultural forces that contributed as well.
