Frequently Asked Questions
Question: My film was broadcast on a community access station. Is it still eligible for entry?
Any non-fiction film or video that has not been screened before at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival is eligible for entry. We love premiers, but films and videos that have been screened on television previously are eligible for entry. The only ineligible films are those that have already been screened at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. However, films previously screened in Missoula, Montana are typically not shown. Mis
Question: I entered my film last year, but it wasn't selected for screening. I've done a little re-editing. Can I re-enter?
We will happily re-consider films that were previously not selected for screening, provided they have seen some degree of re-working.
Question: What formats can you use for projection if my film is selected?
We screen exclusively from 35mm, For video, we screen either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios, or 4:3 letterbox. We screen from most standard and high definition video formats. We do NOT screen from DVDs.
Question: My film was released five years ago. Is it eligible for entry?
We screen many films and videos from earlier years. Filmmakers and distributors are encouraged to submit documentaries from earlier production dates that have not received signficant exposure in Montana, particularly those that have never been screened or broadcast in Missoula. We are always looking for suggestions for our annual retrospective series, which highlights the work of an established documentarian. Past Big Sky Retrospectives have showcased the work of Albert Maysles, Kartemquin Films, Perry Films, John Marshall, and Les Blank.
Question: If I send a self-addressed stamped envelope, will Big Sky return my preview tape/DVD?
Without exception, we do not return preview tapes or DVDs.
Question: My film was accepted for screening at the next Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. Will the festival cover my airfare or gas money to Missoula?
At this point, The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival DOES NOT provide travel or lodging for attending filmmakers. Big Sky DOES provide All Access Festival Passes and many vouchers for complimentary food, drink, VIP parties, Green Room, panels and more, for attending filmmakers during the week of the festival.
Question: My film is accepted for the next Big Sky film festival. When will it be screened and how many times?
Answer: It will be screened sometime during the week of the festival in February, one screening only, unless it wins one of the four competitive categories, in which case it will screen again the final night of the festival. The full schedule of screenings will be released in early January. When a film screens at Big Sky, it is the only film screening at that time. All films are screened at the historic Wilma Theater on Montana's largest screen.
Question: I shot my 2 minute experimental doc on a mix of VHS and my cell phone's camera mode. Is it eligible for entry?
YES! We are not at all concerned about production format and we are interested in all kinds of "experimental" and innovative non-fiction works. Since 2004, we have screened one documentary shot on a digital still camera in movie mode and a number of videos shot on Hi8 and VHS.
Question: We only have a 35mm print of our film. Do you screen from prints or just from video tape?
We screen lots of video tape, but we love 35mm prints. No problem!
Question: Are student projects eligible for entry? Do you have lower fees for student projects?
We love student films and have screened many of them. A student film won the Big Sky Award in 2004 and again in 2007. We do not have a reduced rate for entry, however. Student films compete just fine with professional entries.
Question: How can my company sponsor an event or screening at the festival?
